Villarreal CF

Villarreal CF, also known as Villarreal Club de Fútbol, is a Spanish professional football club located in the city of Villarreal, in the Valencian Community. Founded in 1923, the club has spent most of its history playing in the lower divisions of Spanish football, but in recent years has become a regular participant in the top-flight La Liga.

History:

Villarreal CF was founded on March 10, 1923, under the name Club Deportivo Villarreal. In the early years, the club played in regional leagues, and it wasn't until the 1950s that they were promoted to Tercera División, the fourth tier of Spanish football at the time. Villarreal spent the next few decades bouncing between the lower divisions, with occasional promotions to Segunda División.

It wasn't until the 1990s that Villarreal began to establish themselves as a competitive team. Under the leadership of president Fernando Roig, the club achieved several promotions to the top-flight La Liga, and by the end of the decade had established themselves as a mid-table team. In 2003, Villarreal qualified for their first-ever appearance in the UEFA Cup, where they made it all the way to the semi-finals before being eliminated by Celtic.

The 2005-06 season was arguably the most successful in Villarreal's history. Led by coach Manuel Pellegrini and a strong squad that included Juan Román Riquelme, Diego Forlán, and Marcos Senna, Villarreal finished second in La Liga, their best-ever finish. The club also made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were knocked out by Arsenal.

Since then, Villarreal has remained a competitive team in La Liga, with several top-six finishes and a consistent presence in European competition. In 2021, Villarreal won their first-ever major trophy, defeating Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Stadium:

Villarreal plays their home matches at Estadio de la Cerámica, which has a capacity of just over 24,000 spectators. The stadium, originally known as El Madrigal, was opened in 1923 and underwent several renovations in the following decades. In 2017, the stadium was renamed Estadio de la Cerámica as part of a sponsorship deal with a local ceramics company.

Rivalries:

Villarreal's main rivals are Valencia CF, another team from the Valencian Community. The two clubs contest the Valencian derby, a fierce local rivalry that dates back to the early 20th century. Other regional rivals include Levante UD and CD Castellón.

Notable Players:

Over the years, Villarreal has had several notable players represent the club. Some of the most famous include:

Juan Román Riquelme: The Argentine midfielder joined Villarreal in 2003 and played a key role in the club's success over the next few seasons.

Diego Forlán: The Uruguayan striker spent two seasons at Villarreal, scoring 59 goals in 128 appearances and helping the club reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Santi Cazorla: The Spanish midfielder played for Villarreal in two different spells, first from 2003 to 2006, and then again from 2018 to 2020. He was a fan favorite and helped the club win the UEFA Europa League in 2021.

Giuseppe Rossi: The Italian striker played for Villarreal from 2007 to 2013, scoring 82 goals in 192 appearances and helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League
