Al Hilal Football Club, also known as Al-Zaeem, is a
professional football club based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Founded in 1957, the
club has won numerous domestic and international titles, establishing itself as
one of the most successful clubs in the Middle East.
History:
Al Hilal FC was founded in 1957 by a group of young football
enthusiasts in Riyadh. In the early years, the club played in local and
regional competitions, and it wasn't until the 1970s that they began to
establish themselves as a competitive team in the Saudi Professional League.
In the 1980s, Al Hilal began to dominate Saudi football,
winning several league titles and establishing a fierce rivalry with Al-Nassr
FC, another team from Riyadh. The two clubs contest the Riyadh derby, one of
the most intense rivalries in Middle Eastern football.
Al Hilal continued to be a dominant force in the 1990s,
winning several domestic titles and reaching the final of the Asian Club
Championship in 1991, where they were defeated by Esteghlal FC of Iran. In the
early 2000s, the club hired Brazilian coach Cuca and signed several
high-profile players, including Yasser Al-Qahtani, Mohammed Al-Shalhoub, and
Christian Wilhelmsson. This led to a period of success for the club, with
multiple league titles and a victory in the 2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup.
In recent years, Al Hilal has continued to be a dominant
force in Saudi football, winning numerous domestic titles and reaching the
final of the AFC Champions League three times in the last decade.
Stadium:
Al Hilal plays their home matches at King Saud University
Stadium, which has a capacity of over 25,000 spectators. The stadium, located
in the northern part of Riyadh, was opened in 1985 and underwent several
renovations in the following decades.
Rivalries:
Al Hilal's main rivals are Al-Nassr FC, another team from
Riyadh. The two clubs contest the Riyadh derby, a fierce local rivalry that
